What is a Strength and Conditioning Specialist?

Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS) are professionals who apply scientific knowledge to train athletes for the primary goal of improving athletic performance. They conduct sport-specific testing sessions, design and implement safe and effective strength training and conditioning programs and provide guidance regarding nutrition and injury prevention. Recognizing that their area of expertise is separate and distinct, CSCS consult with and refer athletes to other professionals when appropriate.

In order to be eligible to obtain the CSCS certification, candidates must hold at minimum, a Bachelors degree from an accredited institution, or be enrolled in the final year of an accredited Bachelors program.  Candidates must also hold a current CPR/AED certification at the time of examination for the CSCS.  To become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, candidates must successfully complete a certification exam administered by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) that will test their knowledge of Scientific Foundations and Practical/Applied knowledge.

The Scientific Foundations portion of the exam will assess a candidates knowledge of exercise science, including anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, bioenergetics and metabolism, and psychological techniques.  Candidates are also tested on nutritional factors affecting health and performance, food choices and training methods to maximize performance, signs, symptoms and behaviours associated with eating disorders, effects, risks and alternatives of common performance-enhancing substances.  The Practical/Applied section, will assess a candidate's knowledge of program design, exercise techniques, testing and evaluation and organization/administration.

Upon successful completion of both portions of the certification exam, candidates receive the title of Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. As scientific knowledge, training techniques, and equipment are continuously evolving in strength and conditioning, periodic reporting of continuing education is required of all certified individuals to ensure continued competency and knowledge.
